A publisher turned down a proposal for an expensive colour edition, but agreed to look into producing a less costly version. The editor asked the designer to work out a revised budget and send it to the finance team. Several illustrations could be left out without affecting the argument, although the diagrams explaining the main experiment had to remain. After receiving the figures, the publisher approved the revised version. The rejected proposal and the approved one therefore differed in production choices, not in whether the central experiment would be explained.
