The coastal laboratory needs a technician who can calibrate instruments rather than one who merely records their readings. Its existing staff can collect data, but recent discrepancies arose because instruments were set to different reference standards. The new technician will work with those staff, not replace them. In the revised plan, accurate measurement depends on both collecting a reading and knowing how it was produced. The distinction is therefore between two kinds of expertise within a shared task, rather than between useful employees and employees whose work has no value.
